SURROGACY BASICS

Surrogacy is an arrangement wherein a woman carries and delivers for another person or couple.
When the surrogate mother is compensated beyond the reimbursement of medical and other reasonable expenses it is called commercial surrogacy, otherwise it is referred to as altruistic surrogacy.

Types of Surrogacy:

Widely there are two types

Traditional surrogacy:
in this type of surrogacy the child may be conceived through artificial insemination using fresh or frozen sperms of the male. Hence the surrogate mother is genetically and biologically related to the child born

Gestational surrogacy: in this type of surrogacy the embryo is created using the sperms and eggs of the genetic couple. Hence the surrogate mother is only biologically related to the child born.
In India however traditional surrogacy is not allowed.

Indications for Surrogacy:

Women producing eggs but lack uterus due to a hysterectomy (removal of uterus) or were born with the absence of a functional uterus
Women whose uterus are malfunctioned or may have genetic abnormalities can opt for gestational
surrogacy.
Women undergoing repeated miscarriages or having repeated failures with IVF.
Women having medical issues including diabetes, kidney disorders etc can be suggested gestational surrogacy.
Women in whom pregnancy can be life threatening can also go in for gestational surrogacy.
